Historical insight: In this very Piazza, on 17 February 1600, the philosopher Giordano Bruno was executed by the Roman Inquisition because his ideas were deemed dangerous. Now in the centre there stands a great monument to Giordano Bruno, defiantly facing the Vatican as a martyr to freedom of speech.
