Information you should know about Amsterdam before visiting it. Despite its rich and sound historic background, Amsterdam is one of the cities that remained devoted to the value that it mainly promotes - liberty. History
The historic centre of the city was built in the 17th century and is known as one the biggest in Europe. Those days brought Amsterdam its famous structure made of semicircular canals, which were built around the old centre of the city. Newer streets were built later and are currently inhabited by houses and shops that give life to the city, creating one of the most typical Holland images. This structure has also gained Amsterdam the name of “Northern Venice”.
Transport
As every European city that wants to live up to its expectations, Amsterdam offers a variety of different transport ways in order to facilitate the access of tourists to its hot spots. Amsterdam benefits from connections with trains that cross the whole of Holland, four metro lines, 16 tram lines and 55 urban buses lines. Choosing public transport in Amsterdam would be a shame though considering that the bicycle is one of Amsterdam’s symbols. For those willing to see the city from the two wheels of a bike, Amsterdam offers an exceptionally wide range of options and facilities. Travelling by car, taxi or public transport through the centre of Amsterdam is both difficult and expensive, whereas viewing the city by bike turns out to be one the most enjoying transportation experience.
