Must See Areas in Amsterdam

A city that gathers many places to visit and landscapes to view must have a clear and easy-to-understand structure. In Amsterdam’s case, the structure represents another strong feature of the city. Organized in seven areas that can be easily seen by walking, Amsterdam exposes its most impressive views for the eyes of eager tourists.

The city is divided in seven areas which are: the City centre, the South area (Zuid), the East area (Oost), the West area (Oud West), the South East area (Zuid-Oost), the Diemen and the North area (Noord). If you are a tourist you should know that  Amsterdam has plenty different touristics areas named by their location or by a representative icon of the zone. The city center includes two zones: the historical centre and the Jordaan Area. The historical centre is also formed of two areas: the Nieuwe Zijde (The new part of Amsterdam) and The Oude Zijde (The old part of Amsterdam).

The Nieuwe Zijde (The new part of Amsterdam)

This area represents the new part of the centre of the city which contains one of the most interactive and known attraction of Amsterdam, the Dam Square. The Nieuwe Zijde is located on the west part of the original course of the Amstel river. This part of the city was built between the 13th and the 15th century and around the year AD 1400 the construction of the New Church began. During the 17th century a large part of the city was demolished and this is the reason why the reconstruction of the area began. The area represents nowadays the New Face of the Amstel and is also known as Nieuwer-Amstel. Delimited by streets, the area begins from the west of the Dam Square and ends at Singel. The fresh vibe of the zone is also inspired by the great variety of bars, clubs and coffee shops that it shelters. Amsterdam’s free spirit can be easily breathed and perceived in this part of the city, where history meets modernity in a symbolic location of Amsterdam.

There are certain places you must visit while walking through this area likeThe Albert Heijn Supermarket, which offers a wide range of liquor and cheese, the Nieuwe Kerk, the Royal Palace or the National Memorial Statue.

The Oude Zijde (The old part of Amsterdam)

As part of the centre of the city, the Oude Zijde is located on the east side of the Amstel. Surrounded by the Dam Square, Amstel and the Nieuwemarket, this area was built between the 13th and 15th century. The main building of the area is represented by The Old Church, whose construction began in AD 1300 and which is the oldest church in Netherlands. During the 17th century, when Amsterdam’s Golden Age started, the Oude Zijde became an important centre for commerce. Nowadays you can find everything in this area, from vintage clothing to antiques and books, by visiting the Waterloo Plein market.
This part of the city also shelters the famous Red Light District, along with many well conserved houses and a specific tone of liberty that confers a trademark atmosphere to it.

De Jordaan

Bohemian ambiance mixed with modern, art and romance; that is what you will find in the famous area of De Joordan in Amsterdam. Reuniting artists, students and untamed souls in its cafes, art galleries or narrow streets, the area of Joordan now represents one the most high class and expensive areas in Amsterdam, while in past days it used to be a working class area. The Jordaan is located in the west side of the main canals and has its borders formed by the Lijnbaansgracht, Brouwersgracht, Prinsengracht and the Passeerdersgracht canals. You can get there on foot with ease though as it is just a short walk from the Central Station or the Dam Square.
It is believed that the name of the area is an extension of the French word “jardin” and many streets have been named after flowers or plants.  While you are in the area you can visit the Anne Frank Memorial House or The floating Museum, walk on the same streets Rembrandt did in the last years of his life or acquire some interesting vintage clothes.
