The 2009 is the 11th edition of the Barcelona Asian Film Festival (BAFF). This cool event is on from 30th April to 10th May with a selection of this year's award-winning Asian films from Japan, China, and Korea to the new discoveries from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia amongst others. This is one the best film festivals of the year in Barcelona and a great opportunity to take a peep through an open window on Oriental cultures -all the films are projected in the original version with subtitles in English and Spanish.

Suñol Exhibition Barcelona
Art Dialogues Barcelona
We have decided to focus on the more obscure exhibition scene in this post: The Suñol Foundation, which is showing an small collection entitled 'Dialogues' with art items ranging from re-known artists such as Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. The exhibition aims to highlight concept shifts that occurred during the 20th century using a series of combined works from these artists and more. The Suñol Foundation is a private, non-profit organisation with a collection of contemporary and avant-garde pieces. Exhibit runs until 3rd October 2009.

Architecture in Caixa Forum
Richard Rogers Barcelona
La Caixa Forum is currently hosting a three month exhibition based on the architecture of Richard Rogers - who began his career working with Norman Foster in the Sixties. Often dubbed as humanist style architecture, the interest of Richard Rogers with regard to architecture, that of social inclusion through environment building design, is a common one among modern architects. This theme can be combined nicely with the "Impurity" exhibition currently showing in the CCCB (article also on this site) about the human condition.

Liceu Theatre Barcelona
Gran Theatre of Liceu
Situated on the Ramblas, the Liceu theatre hosts great theatre and opera. The original building was destroyed in a fire and in 1999 was rebuilt to great artistic and technological quality, and maintains the decorative feel of the original house. Guided tours are also available which include the Cercle de Liceu, a private club which shares the building and houses a collection of paintings by Ramon Casas.

The MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona) is a beautiful, modern art gallery and exhibition centre located in the heart of the Raval district. In summer they offer free entrance in the evening, called Nits de Macba, and the atmosphere is great. The exhibitions are eclectic and of very good quality, ranging from cinema to architecture. The area hosts plenty of bars and restaurants and the MACBA is just around the corner from the another art gallery, the CCCB, for a full day of culture.

Starting February 4th until 26th April, La Caixa Forum in Barcelona is displaying an exhibition of artworks from Catalan Artist Joaquim Mir. The exhibitions covers his work from the early days when he frequented the restaurant Els 4 Gats in Barcelona until his later works from 1921 when he moved to Vilanova i la Geltru. The exhibition is called: Joaquim Mir. Anthology.
