Gran Theatre of Liceu
Situated on the Ramblas, the Liceu theatre hosts great theatre and opera. The original building was destroyed in a fire and in 1999 was rebuilt to great artistic and technological quality, and maintains the decorative feel of the original house. Guided tours are also available which include the Cercle de Liceu, a private club which shares the building and houses a collection of paintings by Ramon Casas.

La Central is a series of shops which hold more literary, artistic and classical titles, and in various languages (English, French, Italian etc.). The MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona) is a beautiful, modern art gallery and exhibition centre located in the heart of the Raval district. In summer they offer free entrance in the evening, called Nits de Macba, and the atmosphere is great. The exhibitions are eclectic and of very good quality, ranging from cinema to architecture. The area hosts plenty of bars and restaurants and the MACBA is just around the corner from the another art gallery, the CCCB, for a full day of culture.

La Caixa Exhibitions Barcelona in February

Starting February 4th until 26th April, La Caixa Forum in Barcelona is displaying an exhibition of artworks from Catalan Artist Joaquim Mir. The exhibitions covers his work from the early days when he frequented the restaurant Els 4 Gats in Barcelona until his later works from 1921 when he moved to Vilanova i la Geltru. The exhibition is called: Joaquim Mir. Anthology.

First Steps in Barcelona

Plaza CatalunyaMost people begin their tour of Barcelona at Plaza Catalunya, and this is a great place to start. From here people generally head in either up or down to begin their tour: Down the Ramblas, towards the Port area or Up through the shopping districts of Eixample. A visit to the Barcelona Boqueria marketplace is a must. This ancient marketplace dating from 1217 is stuffed with every kind of produce; fruit, veg, fish, meat, cheese, nuts, herbs, you name it. It's full name is Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, and it's located halfway down the Ramblas.
